2024 has not been the best year for Product Management Salary growth- with the demand for Product Management talent not growing as fast as previous years and many high-profile layoffs in the technology sector hitting the news. In the second half of 2024, the job market does seem to have stabilized. 

Regardless of the market, Product Management roles continue to be vital for any company or team that wants to bring valuable offerings to the market. And it still offers a lucrative career path with salaries that grow considerably as professionals gain more experience. Whether you’re just starting out or have decades of experience under your belt, understanding the salary expectations for each stage of your career can help you make informed decisions about your compensation. 

It is important to remember that each company makes their own decision on compensation plans and ranges. A lot of factors affect the decision including regional location cost of living, work-life balance, and benefits packages. This list of salary ranges is just a starting point for consideration, and may not reflect any individual compensation plan. The salary ranges noted are as of  Q2 2024 and from  Glassdoor. They are national averages for U.S. based professionals.  

Associate Product Manager 

For those entering the world of product management, the role of an Associate Product Manager (APM) is often the first step. This role is especially common in larger, enterprise organizations, where associate Product Mangers are staffed on existing products already out in market. The Associate role is a great way to learn Product Management skills such as conducting Market Research, analyzing data and trends, and working with the cross functional team. Associate Product Managers can report into and support Product Managers or Senior Product Managers.

As an Associate Product Manager, you can expect the following salary ranges based on your experience level:

Product Manager 

Product Manager is the most common role and title. Product Managers are individual contributors managing a product- whether net new or already out in the market. Product Managers need to be skilled at influencing cross functional teams, making data informed decisions on what to prioritize to deliver more business and user value. Our advice to Product Mangers who want to move up into the next rung of the career ladder is to make sure that you tool your products for data, and are able to show a data rich story of your impact. Senior Product Manager 

Not every company has a Senior Product Manager role, so it is possible that some Product Managers who have been successful in their roles are able to negotiate similar compensation packages without the title change. 

A Senior Product Manger would have at least 5 years of work experience as a Product Manager and a track record of working on successful Products. Senior Product Managers have increased responsibility and ownership over their products- this means they may be tasked with setting the Product Strategy to accomplish business objectives. Occasionally a Senior Product Manager can have Product Managers reporting into them, but more often this is still an individual contributor role.

As a Senior Product Manager, you can expect the following salary ranges based on your experience level:

Director of Product Management 

The Director of Product Management is  responsible for managing a team of Product Mangers.  The Director of Product Management  ensures that all Product Managers have the ability to execute on their respective roadmaps- this means that all Product Managers are following a process for Product Management and are trained in the critical skills of Product Management. 

In smaller organizations, a Director may have both strategic and execution duties, like a Senior Product Manager.

Vice President of Product Management 

The Vice President of Product Management is sometimes the most senior role in Product Management at the company. Vice Presider of Product Management is responsible for the overarching Product Strategy and Vision for the company’s product line or suite of products. This means they own the roadmap, dictate and drive KPIs, and make the resourcing and rebalancing decisions to accomplish business goals. A Vice President of Product Management may have multiple Directors reporting into them, and also has to manage and influence their cross functional peers.

Chief Product Officer 

The Chief Product Officer (CPO) oversees the entire product strategy and the product development for an organization. The CPO has a similar responsibility as the Vice President of Product Management- except they may have multiple VPs reporting into them. Sometimes the CPO may also have engineering report into them, though often times the title in this case is Chief Technology Officer or CTO. 

The CPO has the ultimate responsibility for driving a product roadmap that adds value to the company’s users and buyers, and brings growth to the business. The CPO must be excellent at leadership, setting vision and strategy, managing the Product Management Organization, and establishing strong relationships with the C-Suite and their respective direct reports.
